Language pod at COSI

The Ohio State University runs the Language Pod at the Columbus Center of Science and Industry (COSI). Directed by Professor Laura Wagner, the pod is a lab located in COSI. This glass-enclosed space features a variety of outreach activities about language (e.g. interactive demonstrations).

OSU also offers an undergraduate course on how to engage in informal science education regarding linguistic research with museum visitors.

How do we differentiate between a bat and a hat? Or perhaps a mouse and a house?  A group of Medical Research Council (MRC) scientists led by Matt Davis and Sam Evans ran basic tests of speech perception at the Science Museum in London to further examine the listening skills that children and adults use in understanding speech (MRC, 2013).

Canadian Language Museum

Canada is well known for its rich and diverse language heritage for it has played a central role in shaping both the cultural identity of its people as well as the development of its country.  The Canadian Language Museum strives to educate the public and promote an appreciation of the variety of languages spoken in Canada and the impact these languages had on the development of their nation. It facilitates an understanding of how language is constantly evolving, thus introducing the public to the study of linguistics, current language research in Canada, and fundamental issues such as bilingualism, language endangerment, preservation, and revitalization (Canadian Language, 2011).

Candanian English, Eh?’ was their first exibit, ‘Speaking the Inuit Way’ was the second, and the third ‘Le français au Canada’ will open on March 24th.
